Manipulating the Gut Flora

چکیده
The gastrointestinal (GI) tract represents a complex ecosystem in which a balance exists between the intestinal microflora and the host. The microflora comprises predominantly of facultative anaerobes e.g. lactobacillus and obligate anaerobes e.g. bifidobacterium. Aerobic organisms are not present in the GI tract of healthy individuals except Pseudomonas in very small numbers. Most of the gut micro-organisms reside in the colon in a concentration of 101012 colony forming units per ml. The gut microflora is important for maintaining human health. It helps in the development of normal intestinal morphology, maturation of immune system, re-enforcing the barrier function of intestinal mucosa, (thus preventing the attachment of pathogenic micro-organisms and entry of allergens) and for maintaining a chronic and immunologically balanced inflammatory response. In addition, the microbes also contribute to body’s requirement for certain vitamins such as biotin, pantothenic acid and vitamin B 12 .

Effect of Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus on growth performance, gut microbial flora and digestive enzymes activities in Tor grypus (Karaman, 1971)
In this study, two main probiotics (Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp < em>. bulgaricus) were isolated from the intestine of Tor grypus and their effects on growth performance, gut microbial flora and digestive enzymes activities (i.e., α-amylase, lipase, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and alkaline phosphatase) of Tor grypus (Karaman, 1971) were determined. Juveniles of T. gry...

متن کاملEffects of prebiotic Immunogen on growth performance, intestinal bacteria colonization, and survival rate in Rutilus kutum fry
This study was carried out to determine the effects of Immunogen as a prebiotic on growth-related parameters and gut micro-flora in R. kutum fry. A basal diet was formulated using common feed ingredients supplemented with Immunogen at 0, 1, 1.5, and 2 g kg-1 leading to four experimental diets. Fish were randomly distributed in 500 L fiberglass tanks (1×1×0.5 m). The experiment lasted for eight ...
متن کاملP 119: Role of Gut Bacteria on Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that is the most common type of dementia.AD includes 60_80% of dementia and most people with AD have more than 65 years old.AD causes losing neuronal activity by abnormal proteins. Plaques of beta-amyloid and tangles of “tau” protein can lead to AD. Recently evidence has found that AD may come from outside of central nerv...
متن کاملInhibitory effect of arsenic on aerobic gut flora in rat.
An in vivo study was carried on rats to see the influence of arsenic on aerobic gut flora. A significant inhibition of gut flora was observed after 2 weeks of administration of arsenic (1 mg/L) ad libitum with a decrease in stool arsenic level and increase in liver arsenic level. However, this inhibitory effect of arsenic on gut flora was not observed in presence of vitamin E (1 mg/day) or sele...
